Success Story: Meredith Naomi
In february 2014, Meredith Naomi was born prematurely and with breathing problems. She was intubated and stayed 14 days at the hospital, in Oaxaca city. The diagnosis was schizencephaly, a rare birth defect characterized by abnormal clefts lined with grey matter that from the ependyma of the cerebral ventricles to the pia mater, and the consequence is a neurodevelopmental delay.
She arrived at Un Nuevo Amanecer, where she was evaluated and started receiving attention in the Early Intervention, Physical Therapy and Early Occupational Therapy programs. At eight months old, Meredith could hold her head due to the therapies. When she turned one year old, she could and walked eight months later.
Afterwards, Meredith started receiving Occupational and Language Therapy in order to work on the articulation of words and in the development of capacity to understand. She could develop fine motor skills through early stimulation and physical therapy. Also, she learned to eat, dress and put on the shoes by herself.
With five years old, she is currently in preschool education. She is the youngest daughter of four children. Her father works as a waiter in La Crucecita and her mother takes care of the housekeeping.
Because of receiving the proper attention, Meredith Naomi has made significant strides in her personal independence, emotional balance, socialization and learning processes. One of the new challenges for her is the development of reading and spelling skills, and she receives treatment at the Pedagogy Program.
Everyday, Meredith proves that with the proper attention it is possible to transform the future of children with disabilities, and that’s why In Un Nuevo Amanecer (UNA) we celebrate each achievement with a constant commitment to this important cause.
